Excerpt from The Christless Nations: A Series of Addresses on Christless Nations and Kindred Subjects Delivered at Syracuse University on the Graves Foundation, 1895 A returned missionary who attempts to speak on the general subject of missions quickly discovers that most of his auditors expect him to give some account of his own special work, or of his personal observations on the mission field, and it may even happen that a hint will be conveyed to him that it would be better to leave to others the discussion of missionary policy and principles and confine himself to his own more legitimate task. In other words, the missionary is expected to be a reporter only, and not aspire to the higher privileges of the editor´s chair. The following lectures were prepared with a full knowledge of the peculiar standard by which such addresses are judged; but having had not only a long experience abroad, but a very wide view of the missionary situation as it is to-day in the United States, I did not feel at liberty to choose narrow, even though more popular, topics.
