Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from An Introduction to Library Classification, Theoretical, Historical, and Practical, and a Short Course in Practical Classification: With Readings, Questions and Examination Papers This little work seems to need a preface to excuse its appearance, since it may be thought that I have already written enough, and more than enough, upon the subject of bibliographical classification. Two years ago I gathered into a volume, Canons of Classification, a series of essays in which I stated in concentrated form what I considered to be the principles underlying the construction of a book classification, and then focussed them upon the four schemes most generally in use in libraries. I hoped for a small circle of readers; but to my surprise the work received a comparatively wide welcome, and achieved what is not exactly usual with library manuals written by Englishmen, a circulation in America. The present volume does not make the Canons supererogatory; on the contrary that work, with all its imperfections, and, it may be, fallacies, is the best work I have done or am likely to do upon classification. One outcome of it, however, has been the criticism that in it I took too much for granted, that I presumed in my readers a certain acquaintance with technical terms, logical reasoning, and classification construction generally. That criticism is perhaps just. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
