Unfortunately for the world and for his own fame Professor Diman left behind him no finished historical work, embodying the results of his studies, and revealing his merits as a student and teacher. The volume entitled "The Theistic Argument," which has been received with high and discriminating praise, is the only volume he had prepared. This, a posthumous publication, able as it is, does not belong to his chosen department, and it does not show the breadth nor the distinctive characteristics of his scholarship. In the judgment of his friends, therefore, there was a call for the publication of some of his occasional addresses and essays which disclosed his peculiar gifts, and which to some extent had already secured the hearty commendation of cultivated audiences and of the reading public.
