I had, in fact, discovered in the Abbe Roux, not only the Limousin poet whom I had set out to seek, but a remarkable French writer and almost a polygraph. I shall never forget the feeling of surprise which I experienced when I came to examine for the first time the voluminous pile of his manuscripts, when it was, with me, only a question of a note upon a poet.
