Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The Teaching of Holy Scripture on Baptism: The Passages Relating to the Subject Classified and Accompanied Occasionally by Explanatory Notes St. John i. 25. - And they asked him (John), and said unto him, Why baptizest. thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet? Washing with water was among the Jews a mode of purification, and a preparation for the service and worship of God; see cleansing of the Levites (Numb. viii. 6-11); consecration of priests (Exod. xxix. 4); washing of priests before ministering (Exod. xxx. 19-21); after defilement (Numb. xix. 11-22). It was a sign of purification of heart (Ezek. xxxvi. 25, 26). Hence baptism, a solemn act of washing, attended the reception into the Jewish Church of converts from heathenism, and baptism became a sign of change of religion, or at least, of a change of faith and hopes.
