Even the assaults of opponents have resulted in advantage in this respect, as when Neander wrote his ´Life of Christ´ in answer to Strauss´s book, and Archdeacon Farrar, Dr. Geikie, and the late Dr. Edersheim made researches and gave new vividness to the minute events of our Lord´s history, in consequence partly of the book of Renan and others of similar spirit. Healthy criticism has done much in our days to vivify both the Old and New Testaments. More attention is now paid than formerly to the characteristics of the various writers, and to the special circumstances under which they wrote; while we have much greater knowledge of the countries and of the manners and customs of the people.
