Excerpt from Wanderings in Arabia, Vol. 1 of 2 Nearly twenty years have passed since the original edition of Mr. Doughty´s narrative of his adventurous explorations in Central Arabia was published by the Cambridge Press, and it is safe to say that while the learned world of European scientists devoted to the study of Arabia and its problems, geographical, geological, archaeological, botanical, ethnological, and philological, has acknowledged its lasting debt to Mr. Doughty, both English literary men and the reading public at large have come into contact with the work scarcely at all. This is due in part to to the sharp division that separates men of science from critics of literature, and in part to the great length (eleven hundred pages) and costliness of the original edition.
