He never was in the habit of keeping a journal of his acts or of his opinions, nor was he in the habit of recording his views on men and things in letters, or of entering upon a discussion of general topics in his correspondence. I felt, too, that to enter into the details of his private life, and thus attempt to give importance to ordinary occurrences, would be to do that which, if he could speak, he would forbid.
