This holds true no matter what the class is made up of - children, male or female adults, foreign-born, or a mixed group. The true teacher knows his way and gets results. In teaching "Coming Americans," patriotic men and women volunteer their services. They come from every group - industrial, clerical, professional. They have no pedagogical training and welcome suggestions how the work should be done. The suggestions given are for men of this class, who, with limited time, are willing to aid their brother-man. The steps suggested are: 1. Write the hard words in the lesson on the blackboard; drill the men in their pronunciation; when they read the lesson they will be somewhat familiar with the words. 2. Read the lesson. Read it twice or three times, varying the method - in concert, individually - the teacher encouraging and correcting. 3. Turn again to the blackboard; go over the words again; see if the pupils have an idea as to their use. 4. The spelling lesson is to be regulated by the capacity of the class. If the words chosen are too simple, choose others more difficult. 5. Test the pupils in the use of the words they spell; ask each to write a simple sentence on the blackboard, using the word he spells, other members of the class correcting. 6. Question the pupils along the material of the lesson; drawing out their experience and giving them practice in English conversation.
