It was at one time intended to confine it within very narrow limits, and to publish along with it a number of Sermons or other remains not yet given to the world. Dr. Brown so uniformly expressed in his critical judgment of biographies a preference for tins more brief and introductory style, that it was felt to be due to his memory to attempt to adhere to it in his own case. An honest effort was accordingly made to compress the existing materials into the requisite space; but it soon became clear that serious injury would result from such a contraction, and it was resolved to extend the Memoir, and to send it forth alone.
