Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from Catalogue of the M´kie Burnsiana Library: With a List of the Subscribers for the Purchase Thereof The collection of the different editions of Burns´s Works made by Mr James M´Kie, Publisher, Kilmarnock, is perhaps the most complete of its kind that has ever been brought together by one individual. Starting more than forty years ago with the idea of a private collection, the volumes increased so rapidly on his hands that a special addition was made to his house to contain them, which soon became an interesting resort for every student and admirer of Burns both at home and abroad. It was long felt that such an unique collection ran the risk of being dispersed, and from time to time propositions were heard of from various quarters to ensure its permanency in this locality, by purchase on behalf of the public. Nothing came of these, however, until the year 1882, when the matter was taken up by the office-bearers of the Burns Club. In November of that year advances were made to Mr M´Kie, and a conditional sale agreed upon. A meeting of influential gentlemen in the locality was then called, at which Provost Sturrock presided, who, in speaking of the desirability of acquiring the collection, definitely stated that Mr M´Kie was prepared to accept a sum of Three Hundred and Fifty Pounds sterling for it, excluding his copy of the original Kilmarnock edition, a fine copy of which had already been presented to the Bums Monument Committee by Dr A. C. MacLaren, of London. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
