Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The Life of Richard Baxter, of Kidderminster: Preacher and Prisoner During the latter part of the sixteenth century, the Reformation produced great changes among all classes of the English people. Some of them thought these changes had not gone far enough; especially those persons who had associated with the pastors in Wittenberg, Frankfort, and Geneva, and who were not content that any of the symbols of the Latin ritual should be retained in the Anglican Church. They asserted that their Protestantism was the public acknowledgment of their personal responsibility, and their declaration against hypocrisy and priestly domination, their demand for freedom of conscience, and for religious independence. They wished everything to be removed from the temples of the Lord which bore any trace of what they held to be the old superstition, and which could remind the people of "the Babylonian woe" from which they had been delivered. Forgetting that Christianity can never be entirely free from the influence of the creations of genius, they held the beauties of ancient sacred art of little account; and some of them regarded roods and screens, and the storied windows which shed the light of day in variegated loveliness of colour on wall and floor, as the memorials of an idolatry which they had renounced. The contest with Rome had ceased, but the Church in England was disturbed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
