Excerpt from A Commentary on the Holy Gospels Verse 1. Then. When He had done so many miracles (S. Chrysostom, Hom. lii.) S. John (vii. 1) seems to say that Christ had returned to Galilee at this time. From Jerusalem. The Scribes and Pharisees, say S. Chrysostom, Euthymius, and Leontius, were dispersed through all the tribes. But those of Jerusalem were the most arrogant of any, because they lived in the capital city, and were considered the wisest of all. They should rather have said, through all the cities, or all places, as says Theophylact; because after the return from Babylon, there were only two tribes. On the Scribes and Pharisees see chap. ii. 4. The opinion of some, that these were sent from a council of the Scribes and Pharisees of Jerusalem to tempt Christ, appears credible, and in accordance with their disposition and habits.
