Excerpt from Centennial Anniversary: Baptist Church at Newton Centre, November 14, 1880 In the early spring of 1880, the Baptist Church at Newton Centre decided to celebrate its centennial anniversary with appropriate exercises, and appointed the pastor, Rev. W. N. Clarke, D. D., with the following brethren, - Rev. Alvah Hovey, D. D., LL. D., Deacon James N. Newell, A. M., John H. Sanborn, George Warren, and Frank Edmands, - a committee to recommend a time and order of exercises for the occasion. This committee reported in favor of holding the anniversary on the 5th of July, the day of the organization of the church one hundred years before, and were authorized to complete the arrangement for services on that day. But, owing to the resignation of Dr. Clarke and his removal to Montreal, Province of Quebec, as well as to the circumstance that the 5th of July was to be observed by the people as a national holiday instead of the 4th, it was deemed expedient to postpone the centennial services until the 14th of November.
