William Phillips: Preached on the Third of June, 1827, Being the Sabbath After the Funeral Here is a delineation of the character of the good man, and a description of his blessedness. Each of these topics will receive a brief illustration. I. Consider, first, the delineation of the character of a good man. He is said, in general, to be upright. The word literally signifies erect. In its figurative application to character it means, not declining from right. In both its literal and its figurative use it is a relative term. Right affection and right action is that which is conformed to a just standard or rule. The standards adopted among men are various. The great majority of mankind seem to approve or disapprove of purposes and conduct in themselves, according as they are found to promote or hinder their own gratification or personal interest. Others, who are (not unjustly in many instances) styled moral men, regard, in forming and estimating their character, only their relations, and their corresponding obligations, to their fellow men.
