Excerpt from The Doctrine of the Twelve Apostles To bring out a revised edition of Dr Bigg´s Doctrine of the Twelve Apostles is not an easy task for one who, though he has learnt much from the writings of that eminent scholar, is unable to follow him in his argument in favour of a late date for this manual of instruction and worship. Dr Bigg took up an isolated position in assigning it to the fourth century; and as the present editor agrees with the great majority of those who have studied the question, in assigning it rather to the early part of the second century, it seems best to reproduce in the Introduction and Notes Dr Bigg´s argument, as much as possible in his own words, and then to state, with all deference, the reasons why it does not appear to be conclusive. Since the first edition of this book was published, among the most important contributions to our knowledge of the subject are those by Dr J. Armitage Robinson and Dr C. H. Turner.
