Excerpt from The Literary Remains of the Rev. Simeon Singer: Sermons to Children Mr. Singer seems to have been among the first to make a regular feature of sermons for children in an English Synagogue. Long before the introduction of special services for the young, he chose the Sabbath immediately following each festival for sermons meant for children. Later on he appropriated the seventh days of Passover and Tabernacles for the purpose. In these talks to children the preacher was admittedly at his best. Children looked forward with delight to the occasions on which Mr. Singer was expected to address them. His knowledge of the child mind, its foibles and strength, his rich yet simple humour, his inexhaustible store of apt illustration, his love for and belief in the young, combined to make him an effective preacher to them. And his adult hearers enjoyed the sermons quite as much as the children did. His own views as to the composition of children´s sermons are shown in the sermons themselves. It may be of interest, however, to insert here some notes of a lecture delivered by him to the Homiletic Class at Jews´ College. These notes are printed as they were taken down by one of those present on that occasion. They do not represent all that he said, but they are a faithful record of the substance of some of his remarks.
