I can only say that I have lived among them for thirty-four years, and that nowhere does the golden rule, "Do as you would be done by," hold good so much as in Italy. I could tell many stories of their ready kindliness, for, as my mother says in her Letters from Egypt, I "sit among the people," and do not "make myself big," a proceeding an Italian resents as much as an Arab.
