Excerpt from The Last Illness of His Eminence Cardinal Wiseman The impression made upon my mind by the few weeks of the Cardinal´s last illness, I cannot hope to convey to others; but the example of virtue of which I was a witness was so striking, that I think it my duty towards the memory of one whom I greatly love and venerate, to place this narrative within reach of more than those to whom I can relate it by word of mouth. The Cardinal was in so especial a way the property of Catholics, wherever they are found, that I consider that they have a right to be informed of the grand and holy ending of his useful life; and for this reason, after much thought, I have come to the conclusion that I might publish, and ought to publish, even those things that I heard from him in confidence relating to himself. This I now feel, looking back upon his illness, that if I could tell it exactly as it happened, I should do him the fullest justice, and render the greatest number partakers in the privilege that was enjoyed by a favoured few.
