If it had been light, and the landscape not blotted out in fog, one could have seen the valley checker-boarded all over with tumbled worm fences - their outlines blurred with blackberry vines and sassafras growth - which separated the small holdings one from another, with here and there a sombre little cabin - the kernel of its homestead - glimpsed at through a haze of apple trees and improved fruit.
