Excerpt from Composition From English Models, Vol. 2 This book and its companion volume are the outcome of wide experience in the class-room. The method of teaching composition by means of the study and imitation of masterly passages of English prose is one that has been recommended by several great writers. Among them was R. L. Stevenson, who gained in this way his own fluent and individual style. In "Composition from English Models" an attempt has been made to systematize the practice, and the exercises are carefully planned so that the pupil may use each passage as an actual model. Attention is directed to the following points: - 1. The reading of the extracts aloud is most important, for it is by this that an appreciation of the sound and rhythm of language is developed. 2. Great stress is laid on oral composition, in which some practice should be given daily. 3. The exercises are suggestive, and may be varied by others based on the texts studied in class. 4. Careful preparation should be made by the pupil for the chief written exercise of the week. It is well to call for the pupil´s "outline." It is hoped that the books may be found suitable for the use of Pupils in the Lower and Middle Forms in Secondary Schools, in Central Schools and Evening Classes, and in the Upper Standards of Primary Schools.
