Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from El Palacio, Vol. 11 At Valley Ranch, on the upper Pecos, 25 miles east of Santa Fe. the management has just completed the Apache Inn. a hosiery in a superb setting of magnificent mountains, evergreen forest and lovely vales through which rush the clear waters of the tumultuous Pecos. The new building is of much interest because it is an adaptation of the New Mexico Mission style of architecture to a new purpose amidit unusual surroundings. Not far away are the great ruins of Pecos and its massive mission church. It is historically fitting therefore that the Apache Inn should reflect something of the architecture which furnishes the elements that are Stamping Santa Fe with an individuality such as is possessed by but few cities in the world. The New Mexico Mission style, while it harks back to the terraced, informal lines of Pueblo architecture of pre-Spanish times, has absorbed also from the Moorish some features that arc distinctive. It is not a composite but rather a merging of Indian, Oriental as well as Occidental forms amidit an environment and with the use of native material which give it a beauty and ruggedness all its own and have transformed it into an American style that lends itself to every possible use. be it for domestic, business or public purposes. T he Museum of New Mexico, the new tourist hotel, the new Federal Building, a new theater in Santa Fe. the Santa Fe Water and light Company offices, the main building of the State School for the Deaf and Dumb, the wholesale establishment of the Gross-Kelly Company, the Foredry Building, many new homes, are beautiful examples of the New Mexico Mission Style that has also found acceptance in other cities of the Southwest. It is natural that there have developed wide departures from the Pueblo architecture and that liberties have been taken occasionally that rob the architecture of much of its local flavor as well as its fundamental plasticity and informality in which lie its greatest charm.
