Excerpt from The Monitor: A Monthly Illustrated Magazine for Churchmen, Price One Penny The sudden death of Mr. Charles J. Cooke (who, as in previous years, had undertaken the duties of Official Reporter of the proceedings of the Leicester Church Congress and Sub-Editor of the Congress Report) within a few days of the opening of the Congress would have been in every way most disastrous, had it not been for the kindness of his son, Mr. Basil Cooke, who, notwithstanding this terrible domestic calamity, volunteered most courageously to fill his father´s place; and filled it, all the circumstances considered, with singular efficiency. The father´s loss, however, could not but be felt, both at the time of the Congress and in the preparation of the Report. To the want of his watchful and experienced care must be attributed, I think, the loss of the Paper upon "The Moral and Spiritual Training of Church Choirs," which was read by The Very Rev. the Dean of York at the Morning Meeting in the Temperance Hall on Wednesday, September 29th. All inquiries and efforts have failed to recover this Paper. It has been traced to the hands of one of the reporters, who, having made some use of it, laid it again upon the reporters table. Beyond this it has been found impossible to trace it. The loss of this valuable Paper has been matter of very great regret to all who are in any way responsible for it; and especially to the Editor of the Report, - making the Report, as it does, so manifestly incomplete.
