The lecture was written to call the attention of the Church and people to the perversion and abuse of an office in our Congregational churches which was created to assist the pastors by relieving the from much of the detail work of the parish, that they might give their thoughts more entirely to the preaching of the Word; but which, through certain causes, today fulfils no such service. In the second place, and above all, I wished to inculcate the sweet lesson of charity and forgiveness, both as regards practical alms-giving, and also as regards intellectual differences in matters of belief.
