It becomes a matter of no small moment to ascertain, in regard to the two parties whose principles are in contemplation, how far they may respectively be supposed to have had an effect on the church with which they are to be compared, in the construction of her articles and her liturgy. This is proposed as the object of the following introductory remarks: and the first step in the process will be the guarding against fallacies, attached to the names by which the parties are distinguished. In regard to the Caivinists, it is here supposed that some of the doctrines usually passing under the name of Calvinistick were not sustained, at least in their subsequent extent, by the reformer.
