Excerpt from The Indebtedness of Chaucer´s Troilus and Criseyde: To Guido Delle Colonne´s Historia Trojana The following study is a dissertation offered in the spring of 1900 to the Faculty of Philosophy of Columbia University, in fulfilment of one of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. My original plan was to make an investigation of Chaucer´s indebtedness to the French and Latin writers who were his predecessors in telling the story of Troilus and Criseyde, but owing to the fact that Joly´s edition of the Roman de Troie is so very incomplete and uncritical, I confined my study to the work of Guido, citing from the French poem only when it was necessary to quote illustrative parallel passages.
