Excerpt from A Text Book of Irish Literature The method that has been adopted has necessitated the exclusion from this volume of some material which actually comes to us from before the sixteenth century, and which ought therefore, on chronological grounds, to be found here. The Annals, the Ossianic Literature, and the Classical tales, for example, many of which might appropriately take their place in this volume, have had to be postponed for a second part. I have thought it inadvisable, in a text-book of small size, to give a large number of footnotes and references; but I hope to compensate for this by adding a bibliography to the second volume, covering the material dealt with in both Parts, so far as this material has been already published. I have to thank my friends, Mr. Alfred Nutt for kindly reading through the proofs of the Prose Section, and Dr. Douglas Hyde for looking over the chapters on the Poetry; also my cousin, Mr. J. D.
