A singular turn of affairs has resulted in the State conceding all (as it sup poses) that the Free Church asked in vain in 1843 ;and we are urged, in consequence, to lower our banner and to fall into rank again beside our brethren of the Establishment. The appeal compels us to take a fresh survey of our position; and the following pages are offered as a help in that connection to the new generation which has risen up since the Disruption. One or two points it is always important to bear in mind. First of all, the principles of the Free Church can be clearly understood only by those who are acquainted with the history of the Church of Scotland, That history is in itself extraordinarily interesting.
