Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from Songs Songs are a species of poesy, as much as the sonnet is, or the elegy, or the pastoral, or any other form. Therefore it may be not unsuitable to collect songs apart by themselves, the more as the unity attained need not be marred by monotony; for there is no kind of poesy embracing naturally a greater variety of verse. The indulgence of the reader is asked for the notes which will be found under many of these songs. - an unusual feature, but it is hoped not an unuseful one. I have no names for the songs, nor for many of them could I devise titles; this lack I wish to supply in some instances by means of notes that the explanatory office often carried in a title may not be wanting. For a song unhomed from the purpose or occasion of it, may be like a foreigner, speaking to us, yet conveying nothing. Also sometimes a note is used to state the metrical intention of a song. For all poetry, and perhaps especially song, is written to be performed, I mean, read aloud; and if unvoiced, is little less dead than music lying in an unplayed or unsung score. And as it is no fault in a sonata of Mozart that an unskilled player makes but a confusion of it, so it is no ill in a poem if it be difficult of performance, I mean, require nice suppleness of utterance or delicate intonation, and in a bungling delivery will halt or seem unbalanced or incoherent. Hence I have set down the metrical movement of the songs when this has seemed needful or helpful for the voicing of them.
