The chief reason of this is that very few of his poems were printed during his lifetime, 1 and that the first collection of them, published in 1633, two years after his death, seems to have been an unwarranted publishers job, which had no proper editing either in respect to arrangement of the pieces or accuracy of the text. The next edition appeared in 1635. This also was unauthorized; it had the same publisher, but it received some editorial care; it contained a considerable number of poems not previously published; the arrangement of the poems was more orderly, some plain errors in their text were corrected, and various improved readings were introduced.
