But I forbear, fearing the inevitable "Too thin"; and will say that the fact set forth in "The Miner´s Surprise," in the sentence "I represent the prodigals who came in Forty-nine," has more to do with my action; and that necessity, as much as inclination, was the motive power. I have endeavored to set forth my ideas in simple style, without the aid of impracticable meters or inapplicable metaphors.
