The Psalms may be studied in many ways. The scholar treats the Psalms as merely historical documents, and spends his energy in discovering when exactly they were written. This inquiry gives scope for a large amount of erudition, and the results obtained are, without doubt, interesting. As long as we rely on these results alone we may indeed, be able to fill our minds with the sentiments of the human authors of the individual Psalms, and thus gain some little food for devotion. No doubt, I could attune my mind to that of holy David, might occupy myself well during the chanting of the Psalms. The objection to this method is that for most of us the effort is distracting; and though in the minds of well instructed and erudite people the process might be fruitful, in the case of the simple it is somewhat hopeless. For the most part it does not lead to devotional converse with God, therefore it may be safely left alone by the simple.
