It was, like this preface, the better for being short. The partiality which I have always entertained for laconism, has induced me to bring the full length picture of Paris down to a miniature: and as I do not see that a copy mould be exact to the original even to a fault, I have taken some liberties with my author, which I am vain enough to think will be approved of by those who may take the trouble of comparing. Those who cannot, or will not do it, need only be told, that without deviating from matters of fact, I have introduced here and there a few tints which were wanting in the picture to give it a perfect finish. The French painter had huddled up his subjects together, or placed them in a wrong light - I have endeavoured to introduce a better order, and remove that confusion.
