Excerpt from Reminiscences and Observations of the Nineteenth Century: More Particularly Relating to the First Half Having been honored by your former secretary with the request that I write up something of my knowledge of the past, and after much hesitation, as I have no diary to refresh the memory, I have consented to make the attempt, and in the beginning may I ask your indulgence and patience over such of the material as will constitute its chief substance, which is more or less of a personal nature. Men of the present day, who through age and good memory, that goes back toward the beginning of the century, are able to realize the vast changes that have occurred within their lifetime in the material and social condition of mankind. More than 70 years have passed within my remembrance, and many events and occurrences of that early period are yet fresh in my mind.
