Excerpt from The Covenant of Third Church of Christ in Salem: With the Rules of Government, and a List of Members In the year 1735, a contention arose in the First Church, then under the pastoral care of the Rev. Samuel Fiske, which issued in a separation. A majority of the Church, including the Pastor, withdrew, and formed what was afterward styled the Third Congregational Church of Christ in Salem, leaving the minority to constitute the First Church. The plate belonging to the Communion service was equally divided between the two Churches. Under the ministry of the Rev. Nathaniel Whitaker, D. D., the fourth Pastor of the Third Church, a sharp contention arose between a part of the Church and the Pastor, during which their house of worship was burnt, the Church was rent into two parts, and a majority, adhering to Dr. Whitaker, became Presbyterians, built the house of worship now called the Tabernacle, and took the same name as the designation of the Church.
