But with one exception - in a note on a very recent novel - I see no reason to modify materially the opinions I held when I first wrote it. And my then severest critics have now in their very reviews adopted as faith what they formerly called heresies. Because I reverse Mr Bennett´s best work, I cannot be so uncritical as to praise his worst. I should add that while an attempt has been made to combine some sort of bibliographical history with a survey of The Truth about an Author, the evolutionary point of view has governed my own; and that I am writing about Mr Bennett as a fluctuating artist, and not as a man.
