It is not suggested that what has not been translated is of little value. A summary of such portions is supplied. But it is hoped that this will serve the student and average reader as an introduction to the deeper study of this great Church classic. Notes have been given wherever they were thought necessary, and the chain of the argument is shown throughout in order to facilitate the understanding of the work as a whole. A fuller and deeper study of the theology of Irenæus, the writer would beg leave to state, is to be found in his Irenoeus of Lugdunum, recently published by the Cambridge Press.
