It is situated fourteen miles above the city of Washington, and elevated about 158 feet above the height of the inflowing tide at Georgetown. And in this continued declivity there can be secured, at the several available points, ample power for the most extensive manufactories. But the greatest amount of this power is concentrated at the Great Falls where the river is nearly half a mile wide, and is divided by a chain of islands located near its centre, thereby giving two currents, respectively known as the Virginia and Maryland channels - the Virginia being now the main stream.
