Excerpt from The Indian Child´s Mother My first impression of India as a whole - of the sight of her face, the sound of her voice - dates back to what I saw from the roof of an old palace in Lahore and from what I heard while listening to a friend. We used to sit, in the evening, in a chubara next to the throne room, and converse about many things. This upper room was at a great height. It was a watch-tower from which we could see the whole city and the plain beyond - as far as the round rim of the horizon. Across the Ravi the tomb of Jahangir commands the plain; here and there are dotted numerous villages. As night fell, the street below became a gulf of darkness, the passers-by as shadows on the patches of moonlight, their footfall too faint to reach the ear; farther down a crooked lane was the blurred outline of a Hindu temple; at the other end of the city, hardly visible in the smoke haze, rose the spire of the Christian church.
