The fifth and eighth chapters are reproduced in somewhat altered form from the American Journal of Theology for April, 1906, and April, 1907, respectively. The writer desires here to acknowledge the courtesy of the Department of State at Washington, D.C., in transmitting to him a copy of an unpublished diplomatic correspondence on the subject of the treaty rights of American missionaries in Turkey, of which two extracts are given in this book, and of the Protestant Chancery at Constantinople, Turkey, in permitting him to consult the archives of that office for some facts of the early organization of the Protestant civil community in the Turkish empire which could not otherwise have been learned.
