It is now fully seventeen years since he published a volume of sermons. It has been a matter of surprise to many, and of regret to still more, that he did not carry out the plan which he was known to have in view, of bringing out a second series. He had abundant and varied stores at command, and had had, besides, every encouragement to do so from the wide circulation and the acknowledged value of the earlier volume. But the reasons for this delay were sufficient to justify it to himself, and to those who knew him most intimately. At the time spoken of, he was beginning slowly to recover strength, after years of forced silence. His pleasure in preaching, always great, increased with returning health, and he could not refrain when he had opportunity from using the living voice for his Master.
