Excerpt from Ranch Life: And Other Sketches In the latter part of May, 1870, an American, seeking a more congenial clime and sunnier skies within the confines of his own country, boarded a railway train in Chicago. The blue grass region of Kentucky had been his home for the first nine years of his life; the next fourteen years he spent in a county of Southern Ohio, bordering the Ohio river; the last ten in Wisconsin. Four years of the latter period were spent as a Union soldier in the Civil war, and the succeeding three years as a civil officer of the national government. His object in taking this train was to visit the territory of Colorado, Denver being his immediate destination. At that time the railroad fare from Chicago to Denver on the Union Pacific was $70. This fact is not interesting except by contrast with the present fare, $22.60 (1914).But during the first eight days of June no rail had reached Denver. The Union Pacific had been built on a parallel one hundred and twenty miles north of Denver through Cheyenne, a road called the Denver Pacific then being built to connect Denver with Cheyenne.
