Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from The Catholic Doctrine of the Blessed Eucharist: Commonly Called the Lord´s Supper, in a Sermon, Preached in the Court-House of Newton, Sussex County, December 2, 1821, and Now Published at the Request of the Catholics of the District My Brethren, The question which the apostle put to the Corinthians, in the words of my text, was of infinite importance, not only to them, but to all Christians, since the lime of Jesus Christ to the present moment, and will be so likewise to millions yet unborn. It is not a question to be passed over lightly, to be treated with indifference, or dismissed with neglect; for it is a question in which our faith is concerned, whose answer involves our dearest interests, temporal and eternal, and of which none but wise men are competent to judge. To you, then, as wise men, as persons instructed in matters of faith, I put the same question, and ask of you, in the language of the apostle, "The chalice of benediction which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? and the bread which we break, is it not the partaking of the body of the Lord?" My brethren, reflect for a moment before you presume to answer; 1 speak as to wise men. Let your answer correspond with the idea I have formed of you. Your salvation is at stake. Let not passion betray, or prejudice mislead you. Take wisdom for your guide, and let her direct you in your determination. The highest proofs which we can exhibit of this inestimable qualification is an humble reliance on the words of our Saviour, and his inspired apostles.
