An earnest desire has been cherished that, through the help of Him whose guidance and blessing have been sought, the character of the dear departed should be faithfully depicted. This has been attempted, not only in the delineation of its natural features, amiable and estimable as these were, but also when presenting to view the enlarging, ennobling, and sanctifying effects of Divine grace upon a heart renewed in Christ Jesus and filled with His love. He was truly in very many hearts as "an epistle known and read of all men;" and it is believed that, by these, a somewhat connected sketch of his earnest, dedicated life will be valued. No memoranda, indeed, nor any MSS. fitted for the purpose of the biographer, were left by the dear deceased, but his valuable letters supply the want to a considerable extent. They reveal the hidden springs of action, and show whence he derived strength and grace to endure as well as to serve; whilst they also exhibit some of the varied and instructive traits of his heart and mind under different circumstances.
