Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Index to the North American Review, Vol. 1: 1815 1877 I cannot send my little book into the world, without expressing the hope that it may satisfy every reasonable expectation. I have spared no pains to make it complete and accurate. If it is not so, the fault is my own; for on every side I have met with encouragement and assistance. The fullest sources of information, in regard to the past and present writers, have been opened to me by the past and present editors, by the late and present publishers. I am able to furnish the names of the writers of nearly all the principal articles; and of nearly all the critical notices, except during the editorship of Dr. Palfrey, who is too infirm to give me any information. I have thought it important to place on permanent record the names of all who have contributed any, even the least, thing to this valuable journal; and think I have reason to be gratified at the degree of my success. I have sought to give the full names of the writers, in the Index. I have not always been able to do this, because in some cases of the earlier writers the lists which remain give merely the surnames, and not even the initials of the Christian names. In the case of later writers, the initials are given; but the writers are not always sufficiently known to enable any person to fill them out with much confidence. I have done this, however, in most cases, by the help of library and College catalogues, and without, I hope, many errors. In the Subject-Index, I have tried to give the names of authors, at least once, in full. This is so important, now, in all bibliographical work, that I have thought it worth while to spend much time in ascertaining them. All readers of the "North American Review" know that the books placed at the head of an article serve often, like the preacher´s text, merely to suggest the subject of the article. In such cases, I have not generally entered the title in my Index. Sometimes, however, if the book would afford additional valuable information on the subject of the article, I have given it. In the Critical Notices, on the other hand, in most cases, the subject of the book is not touched in the notice: here, again, I have not entered its subject in the Subject-Index.
