For I felt the faults of the Book; felt, too, its worth, and knew that it was part of the fruit of much arduous Thinking, and other Endeavour, continued through many years. Valuable and endeared to me, how could I but wish it might be so to others? Yet to solicit favour or to ask abatement of censure I should have thought alike vain and dishonouring.
