Excerpt from Index of Economic Material in Documents of the States, Illinois, 1809-1904: Prepared for the Department of Economics and Sociology of the Carnegie Institution of Washington Uniform entry words for subjects recurring in different states will be retained throughout the series. It will thus be possible to make a study not only of the historical development of an economic subject as reflected in the documents of an individual state but also to make a comparative study of that development as it has taken place in the country at large. To accomplish this purpose it has been necessary to make the selection of entry words without reference to the peculiarities of local usage, such peculiarities being recognized in the case of each state by cross-references. The abbreviations employed are believed to be sufficiently obvious to make a table of them unnecessary. Unless otherwise stated the size of the books is octavo. A feature introduced in the New York part of this index, and not employed in the preceding parts (i.e. Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont), is the system of references from locality. This feature has been made a part of the succeeding issues. The present volume follows the preceding volumes in form, except that perhaps a little more space has been given to checklist entries. It seemed necessary to do this, because of the fact that, in Illinois, most of the early volumes of the Collected Documents were issued with duplicate paging; i.e., one for the volume and one for each document in the volume. The result was that from about 1840 to 1877 there exist two editions of many Illinois documents. The most concise way of recording each edition proved to be the one adopted, i.e. by collating each in checklist form. Another reason was the fact of the discontinuance of the Collected Documents of Illinois in 1897. This cessation made a checklist of subsequent separate, or department, serials absolutely necessary, and, on the whole, it was thought best to collate the entire set of serials, and have the record complete. The present volume has been preceded by seven similar volumes, devoted to the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and California, respectively. It will be followed by others, each devoted to a single state. The work when completed will, therefore, furnish an index to the economic material in the reports and governors´ messages of all the states of the Union. In the preparation of this volume the collection of the New York Public Library has been used as a basis. The collections of the Library of Congress, the Illinois State Library, the Illinois State Historical Library and the Chicago Historical Society have also been examined. Acknowledgment is made for courtesies extended by each of these institutions in the course of the compilation of the present volume.
