Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Memoirs of the Cardinal De Retz, Vol. 1 of 4: Containing the Particulars of His Own Life, With the Most Secret Transactions of the French Court and the Civil Wars When the Memoirs of the Cardinal de Retz were first published, (in 1717) the general approbation they met with, not only abroad, but among those of our own nation that understand French, gave room to hope, that some able writer would not have thought it beneath him to have translated them into English. But after a long expectation, seeing no appearance that there was any such design in hand, not even by those who made it their business to enrich the publick with their labours of that kind, I was induced to attempt the thing; which, I own, I did before I well knew how hard the talk was. For I soon perceived, that as no book, perhaps, deserves better to be made English, so, perhaps, no book is more difficult to be translated, if it be done in a manner that preserves, rot only the life and spirit, but likewise the true sense of the original, which, in some places, many Frenchmen themselves can hardly come at, by reason of the defects and mistakes in the copy. Being however once set upon it, and finding myself supported and encouraged by the pleasure I took in reading over and over that valuable piece; but above all, being excited to go on, by a person to whom I owe the greatest respect, and without whose advice and assistance it had been impossible for me to go through with it, I resolved upon continuing, and doing my best, not to make it appear contemptible in the new dress I was to mew it in. If I have not succeeded so well as I could have wished, I may fay however, in my own behalf, that I have spared neither pains nor time, to bring it, with the assistance before-mentioned, as near perfection as I was able, and that I have besides, upon all occasions wherein I have met with difficulties, consulted the be ft judges I knew, both of the French and English languages.
