Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Lecture on John Scott and John Marshall It has been said that every generation of every nation has had its representative men. However untrue this may be, when applied to all nations, in all times, yet the proposition may be conceded, when limited to the last 150 years and to this country and the more educated and refined nations of Europe. Such representatives have not been confined to a single class or to a particular occupation, but have existed among different classes and numerous occupations. Thus, in the nations referred to and during the period mentioned, there would be no difficulty, it is believed, in pointing out men living at any particular time, who distinguished themselves in science, literature, art; in manufactures, commerce and business; in philosophy, statesmanship and politics; in mechanics and invention; in medicine, theology, law and other professions. Undoubtedly, men would differ widely as to the relative importance of these in the upward march of civilization and government, but, as the eye can no more say to the foot, "I have no need of thee," than the foot can say to the eye, "I have no need of thee," it may be fairly assumed that each and all are essential to social and moral progress. In other words, it is the diversity of talents and action which gives uniformity in progress. In promoting such progress, it is not here claimed that either of the men constituting the subjects of this paper transcend in all respects others who might be named in the same or other classes or occupations. On the contrary, it may be conceded that, in many respects, each played a subordinate part. They both lived during most of the last half of the eighteenth century and a little more than the first third of the nineteenth century.
