Excerpt from Hand-Book of Minneapolis: Prepared for the Thirty-Second Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Held in Minneapolis, August 15-22, 1883 Previous to the inception of this volume no concise history, either of the City of Minneapolis or of the State of Minnesota, had ever been attempted. The materials at hand for its preparation were, therefore, of a very fragmentary nature, and have with difficulty been fitted together, in the effort to hastily frame a continuous record. Judging that the history of a large city is inseparable, particularly in its early years, from that of the commonwealth of which it forms so important a part, its designers have intended that the first thirty pages of the volume should serve as an appropriate introduction to the principal and more specific portion of the work. The one is simply the natural background on which the separate features of the other may be more distinctly traced. The Author, in concluding his work, desires to record his obligations to Prof. N. H. Winchell, of the State Geological Survey, for his invaluable assistance in the collection and arrangement of geological and physical facts. To the different writers whose works he has consulted, and from whose stores of information he has freely drawn, he would acknowledge his indebtedness, en masse.
